Is there a way to update QDIR ?

I would like to be able to....
ADD an entry into QDIR for the TMP directory, for a TEXT file that has been copyfiled into TMP folder, so that I can then Open and Read it as a Text File in Comet.

Somewhere along the line I got part of a program that has an UpdateQDIR routine in it. It includes a bunch of variables for which I do not have any documentation on how to use.
It uses the format
QDIRREC: FORMAT FILEZ$;FEXT$;T$;XL1$;XL2$;KE$;OFF$;S16$

Is there a better method than just writting directly to QDIR ?
