Nobody's mentioned Small Claims Court. You didn't state the extent of the work or if you have any "proof" for a case. Your word against his plus any scrap of evidence (I'm using email for the little stuff) and you have "this is how we did business" since I took over the account.
I suppose you'll have to refute his "doesn't work" claim. But "doesn't work" is an admission that the work was requested/contracted.
If you know who the new software vendor is, give them a call and ask them to "testify". They probably won't but you'd put a bug in their ear about thus guy :)
Maybe you can get on Judge Judy. She must be tired of all those "girl gives money to boyfriend" cases. He says it was a gift. She says it was a loan.
