Getting Paid

Anyone on this forum have experience with customers who refuse to pay?
One of the late Norman's customers has decided that he is abandoning Comet and refuses to pay for work I've done in good faith. And, no I don't have a contract. I've never had this experience before so I never bothered.
Does it make sense to get involved with a collection agency or a lawyer?
