Low numbered ports have been reserved. The others are open to anyone.
Firewalls have become very good at blocking off unused ports. That's why hackers, virus writers, and that ilk have locked in on ports that are almost always open. 25, 80, 443 and the like.
If a hacker tried to attack 11750-59 and got a response from Comet, what could they do? Probably nothing. Same for XAP.
If you had another application that needed to use one of the Comet ports then one of the apps would have to move. I've never moved 11750-11759 but I have moved my XAP port. I think 8080 is a bad choice because of conflicts.
Don't worry, be happy!!
