The connection to the Internet seems to be the bottleneck. You'd need to have something very fast to prevent other traffic (YouTube, email, etc) from taking all the bandwith. Most LANS are running 100mbs cabled. Up to date ones could be 1000mbs (Gigabit). A T1 line is 1.5mbs and a T3 is 45mbs.

Jon at E&B has posted some hints at his VM project. The servers will be in house.
