Comet will run in a V/M environment, we currently run Comet on an HP G5 on Windows '08 Hyper-V (migrating to a G6 currently) along with several other applications housed in their own V/M. The data is provided to the machine via a SAN (Storage Area Network), but along a bonded Gigabit connection.
I don't think the design you are intending is advised. If you want to outsource the environment you should be looking at a Terminal Services (RDC) or citrix type approach. Processing of Comet data happens on the client side, not the server side, so if you are selecting a large group of records you are creating a lot of I/O accross the public network. The data and processing should be as close to each other as possible.
Each file can be a maximum of 1MB in length Uploaded files will be purged from the server on a regular basis.
