What we found is that encrypt/decrypt use the current length of the string, not the declared length. So, if you get the string by formatted read, it will be blank filled, and if you get it by using input it will be stripped. It is the same when dealing with keys. The key function will return the variable padded with blanks up to the key length. The "key=" clause on a write will pad the variable with blanks up to the key length before using it.
The same goes for the "seed" variable.
