VPN's themselves are well tested and safe. Both hardware and software. The main concern these days is the PC attached at the the other end of the VPN. Is it clean of viruses, malware, etc.

Take a look at NAP. The software, included with Server 2008 (I think), allows you to quarantine any PC connecting to the network that is not up to date in AV and security patches. Quarantined users gets limited access until the PC is clean and current.

I wouldn't worry about IPv6 for a while. All IPv4 stuff will work forever.

Imagine a web enabled smart toothbrush. When you brush, it monitors your saliva and sends updates to your dentist's office. When your reach some threshold, your Dentist's booking system will send a booking date to your calendar. You confirm and your set. Of course, if you don't brush the required number of times, the toothbrush will send a signal to all the web enabled smart smoke alarms in your house that will begin their shrill beeping until you brush.

I don't want to think about the web enabled Body Mass Index sensor that will be installed in the handle of my web enabled smart refrigerator.
