compiling/using/understanding the MySQL API libraries is almost a cakewalk compared to what I've seen with the ODBC libraries... and unfortunately some of the complexities of the ODBC libraries would also have to be passed on in whatever interface we made (setting up/choosing DSNs, database drivers, etc).

It looks like I'll be leaning toward MySQL - at least for now.
