Comet Colors

I would like to be able to display a warning message in red. My problem is existing colors. If I display a red message and the background of the user is red, no one can see it. I have tried to use the various GetThis/GetThat tools and can not seem to make sense of them and/or they do not reflect the subtle differences in colors. Does anyone have a way to get the current values of a screens colors and then make some sort of calculation to display red on whatever (or yellow on red if a red screen). I do not want to force background (red on white for instance) I want to use the current colors and adjust the color of what I display.
