I recently implemented a solution for scanning checks.

A regular small footprint scanner is connected to the system, the user scan the check (or other confidential/sensitive data). The app saves it to a predefined folder (COS in this case), pressing F4 on the Comet app forces Comet to grab the TIF file, encrypts it using an external encrypter and then archives it on a Comet folder out of reach of regular users.

So it can be done, if you have a small app to grab the data out of the device and drop it somewhere where Comet can find it.
