Creating TEXT files with extensions (8.3 filenames)

is there any easy way to create
var.file.name$ = "F25FEB10.txt"
var.dir.name$ = "bob"
CREATE var.file.name$ DIR=var.dir.name$

the create seems to fail because the name is 12 characters, not 8 (this factoid is in the wiki about the CREATE statement)

for now, I'll have to use another directory, and use the file name without the dot, without the extension

will RENAME work... the documentation doesn't give any info about the names...
