is it as simple as just completing the following?:

1) creating a new file to hold the data
2) looping thru the IMAGE file and writing to the new file
3) changing every READIMAGE to READ, WRITEIMAGE to WRITE in the programs that READ/WRITE
4) recompiling my programs
5) test

all I know about IMAGE files is that I once looked using DDUMP, and noticed that there was a character before each string that had the current length of the string, and that the numeric fields were in binary or some other compressed format.
