Pretty much. And I'm glad to hear you say "is it as simple as..." :-)

Obviously you'd want to do this when nobody was using the file. You'd do a READIMAGE on the record and a WRITE to the new file. While you're at it you might want to consider making it an extended keyed file and even possibly a multi-keyed file if that would be useful.

Also, when you're going thru your programs looking for I/O statements to change be sure to look for all the synonyms for READ/WRITE such as INQUIRE, UPDATE, EXTRACT, INSERT, REWRITE, etc. Better also look at all FORMAT statements used by the I/O statements in case they refer to specific record positions.

And, if you use The Reporter, you'll need to update #FILES and/or #CFILES.
