Whats an "Edit Mask?" (JUST kidding!) I agree, but I think you also would want an override, or a way to handle negatives. Foe example:

Given the number 6179354.86

1. 6179354.86 (General Style)
2. 6,179,354.86 (Comma Style)
3. $6,179,354.86 (Accounting Style)

When it comes to Negatives, do you want a leading minus, trailing minus, or parentheses around the number?

Thinking ahead, would we want to be able to define this not only for screen output, but also for sending to an excel spreadsheet with a specific edit mask? If so, does that in any way impact how we achieve the edit mask?
