As far as the invalid links are concerned, a couple of things will cause that error:
1) #FILES kept a record keyed by hex 7F + the link name for each link defined. This allowed it to find the link attributes based solely on the link name. If this 7F record is missing you'll get the error.
2) The second reason you can get that error is if the information in the 7F record is invalid. If you look at the old XFIL.INC include file which defines the #FILES record types you can see the layout of this record in FORMAT 1031. The conversion program tries to validate the source and destination files indicated in that record.
