It really shouldn't be this hard... I thought everything was installed and running? It sounds like you didn't answer a couple of the questions properly for your desired configuration when you ran CometServerProducts.exe.
You may not see a tray icon if you unchecked "Show Security Server Icon". If you rerun the installation, be sure it is checked.
Since you are not using the file system, you could have unchecked "File System" and it would not have been installed. Since it sounds like it did get installed and is running, you will have to shut it down before rerunning the installation. You can do this by running the Windows Services.exe program and "stopping" "CometServices". When you rerun the installation, you can uncheck "File System".
