If memory serves me... the Romans used to have a change of emperors and they'd have to add days to, for example, August to show Emperor Augustus was a Very Important Guy...
I seem to remember that they also remamed months for emperors... the fifth month Quintilis became July when one of the Julius's came to power
remember that the week is the one thing we all seem to be able to agree upon... in the Middle East, for example, you have:
Gregorian Calendar: favoured for Civil Use by us
Hebrew Calendar: favoured by Jews for Civil and Religious use
Muslim Calenar: -ditto-
the only thing all the calendars have in common is the 7 day week... and they always agree on what day is Monday
