I know it's possible to store binary data (images, for example) in a database, but have never messed with it. I always heard bad things about 'BLOB' fields, so I've avoided them without much research.

Nulls: I have a lot more experience with SQL/etc than I do with Comet, and nulls have always worked fine; if you're trying to read a MySQL database from Comet and having problems there, I'd suggest it's a Comet issue. You can check by running the same query directly against the MySQL database using a frontend (MySQL Administrator) or the command line client -- not sure how your environment is setup.
