I actually do have a clarification...
the problem of killing the COMET16 subsystem has occurred when one of the strings (needle or haystack):
IF haystack CONTAINS needle THEN
was defined by a SET statement
I also have places where I check for paths:
IF path.and.or.file$ CONTAINS "/"
the string is explicitly given as a constant, and I've never had any problems... although I can't say that this is the reason it works...
