Grant:

I spent many nights in the early '70s with a Singer System TEN, programming POS (Point of sale) applications... a decimal machine with a 10,000 character memory, of which programmers had use of 9,000.

since the instruction word was 10 characters long... you knew you had to fit everything in 900 lines of assembler code...

we also had access to 9,000 characters of "Common" memory, so you could double your RAM by judicious use of LOCKing out other partitions (there were 10 of them) loading an overlay, putting goodies in common... doing the deed, unlocking Common and loading the next overlay.

needless to say, this would only work during night-time runs, since locking out other terminals meant locking out cash registers in another part of the store.

I think the wisdom is that no matter how much we swore at the 4K partitions, overlays, and 900 line program limits at the time, we still swore by them when meeting with customers.

It was still disk based and way ahead of punched card based files etc, etc!
