The NCR 304 (you can find it on Wikipedia) had 4,400 10 character words of CORE memory. 4,000 for us, 400 for the Executive program.
The most basic instruction - Add A to B put the result in C -- took 20 characters.
The favorite trick was to put the initialization code in the data input area; I think we did that on the first Q machines. Read the first data into the no-longer needed code.
