If you're using the "automatic" update, you don't even have to worry about the ($UPDATES) folder. What is important is the ($COMET) folder. The error msg you're getting suggests that maybe your alias is wrong. Check to be sure the ($COMET) alias is correct. It is created by CosW. The alias should point to your comet executables folder. In there you should find CAUpd.exe. It is installed by CometWorkstation.exe.
BTW, is your remote's shortcut running Comet.exe or CosW.exe? If not using Comet.exe, might want to try that.
