COMMON is treated like it was an IMAGE file. There's hex length character in front of each $tring field. I don't use the "B" option so it might make things different.

Try this. Compile a program and get the length of COMMON. Add "LENGTH 1 & COMMON X$". Do another compile. The way I compile the COMMON length increases by 2.
