in a nutshell... my problem has always surrounded:

"You can't assume that EXCP is reset to 0 at the beginning of each statement."

I guess that now that I've figured out that:

I only know an error has occurred if EXCP= or EXCPSUB= has been taken
only then should I look at EXCP

the method of looking at the "RC.GOOD.KEY" should work

I have no clue what would be involved to implement it, but I think some way to reset EXCP would be helpful
