Thinking out loud here, I'm not sure I agree with your proposed solution to the FSTAT key length issue. In the case of CED you know what you're looking for so your solution works. If you're doing an FSTAT on a file to find out its key length and you have no idea what it is, how would you know to look at 2 or 3 bytes?
Although it requires a change to your program isn't the safest thing to do is to take the NUM of whatever FSTAT returns in the 3 bytes?
Each file can be a maximum of 1MB in length Uploaded files will be purged from the server on a regular basis.
