Honestly I would have expected Comet to timeout eventually when it found it couldn't connect to the down server. But, I'm not familiar with VPNs. Assuming your users can still do something productive with the second server down, I suggest you setup alternate configurations that don't attempt to connect to the remote server. Then when it's down, they can still connect.
