After a re-boot (not just a stop/start of the COMET service), things seem to have righted themselves.
An Important thing I forgot to mention before:
during the delete via COMETEX I got a message mentioning something about Visual Studio wanting to do something
Perhaps this was caused by some pointer to be stepped on.
after re-boot, I figure I re-loaded all the COMET software, and QDIRBLD now finds the directory with the 3 items I just added today
Still have no idea why COMET was invoking Visual Studio... Is that some kind of default analysis tool for COMET?
