All Comet files except text files have fixed-length records. No Comet files except text files have a record-delimiter. For text files it's a carriage return + line feed (hex 0D0A).

It sounds like you're going to go to a lot of effort to find the bad data. Why not just let Comet do it? Write a program that INQUIREs each record with EXCP= to trap and report the E46?
