We certainly don't suggest you go back to Comet 2002. Which version of the Security Server were they last running successfully? Did the version of Windows change since then? Can you try another USB port on the machine? Are there any other USB devices on this machine? Can you try moving the plug and security server to another machine?
The security server does several retries before it finally issues the error you describe. One thing you might try is to manually uninstall the USB drivers and then reinstall them. You can do this using the CbSetup.exe program, which you'll find in the same folder as the security server.
