Aye-yaye-yaye! I see what's going on. My mistake. EXCPSUB doesn't work on POSITION for either Comet16-compiled programs OR Comet32-compiled programs! Bad, bad, bad. This will be corrected in the next Comet release.

It's amazing how the simplest changes can cause complicated problems...
