common variables in comet 2016 32bit

i am sorry for the kinda stupid question.
i am changing our entire system from comet 2000 to 2016 comet32.
so that i can utilize external database like "sql" but while doing so
i noticed that alot of the programs do not pass information via the common as the do on our comet 2000.

are common variables obsolete and replaced by this setglobal/getglobal or should they work and i am just going crazy.
