the trace shows:

the first value causes all-black (maybe???) on the screen
and the 3F matches the colour code I found in the program

I thought there might be something like overwriting the control characters that surround it, but an not sure

another is that this is some kind of initialization problem where there's some rogue value in there (I was expecting to see 20 for spaces or 00 for nulls)
