I had my end-user go to one of the PC's reporting the "idle" problem
and do the following ( Win2K OS ):
Go into Properties of Network Places
Go into Properties of Local Area Network
Go into Configuration of the Network Adaptor
Go to the Power Management tab
Uncheck the box that states "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". OK all the way out
The end-user did this on one workstation and reported back that his
test of leaving Comet for 5 minutes or so to do something else, then
coming back, had Comet responding immediately where there was a long
hesitation previously. Perhaps this is the answer.

I've noticed that Microsoft has a nasty habit of setting default values on the O/S installation as if it's going onto a laptop. All
kinds of power-saving modes are turned on and it really is a pain in
the neck to find them all. You'd think a quick "Is this installation
going onto a laptop or desktop?" would set the correct defaults.
