We solved the serial ports problem using a totaly different approach.

We got a Digi TS-16 Port server. It's a 16 serial ports that talks IP to the network. each serial port has it's own IP port. This way we can talk to digital scales, bar code readers and label printers. Only one Comet host does all.

In the other division, we got a Digi-One... that's a single serial port that talks to Comet the same way the TS-16 does. In that case the scanner is a keyboard wedge and the printer is a network printer (connected with a ethernet-to-parallel print-server).

Simple technology that proved very reliable when used with Comet.
