SO, Here is the situation as I understand it, after many emails and phone conversations:

1. The customer was using a scale for several years.
2. The customer was using a Microsoft quick basic program to communicate with the scale.
3. The customer changed the hardware and software on which the scale was communicating.
4. The Quick Basic program stopped working "for some reason".
5. You dragged out your old unused serial port program and that did not work as well.
6. Comm relay gives the error "access denied -- error 5".
7. The program works on another (Windows 2000) machine.

Since the customer is a subscriber, we will help get this running if we can. I think that once we find out what is wrong, the Quick Basic program will work as well.

The next step is to use hyper terminal to try to communicate with the scale. We need to find out why the com1 device cannot be opened. I suspect that there is some other program or service running that holds the comm port open. If not, the problem may be with the built in firewall. Is this xp service pack 2?
