I had a brand new computer I just built for the school here. I was using it for testing and it had windows 2000 professional installed on it.
I installed windows xp professional on it and installed comet and ran the serial test program. NO PROBLEM.
I then installed xp service pack 2 and again ran the serial test program. AGAIN - NO PROBLEM.
This is an Intel motherboard (D865GBFL) with 512 mb memory. Fresh install of xp pro from msdn. Nothing else on it.
The error message you are getting almost sounds like com1 is not present on your machine.
