Actually this was because calling on dos/windows to find a file was/is MUCH slower than reading a qdir keyed file. All object entries are in the qdir, it is the same size as without a library.
This performance change will be noted when we get rid of the qidr in future versions of comet.
You should be aware of this performance hit.
