The answer is no you dont "have" to run W2K3 servers but you will then run in what is called "mixed mode" not "native mode".

The issue is the level of control of administration you want over the network and the level of security. Active Directory is a bear, we have several hundred users across about 30 servers and the management of the global enviorment (the forest) is tough without the active directory component.

How are you currently managing user rights to a given server? Are users authenticating to your network via a primary domain controller now?
