I have not done exactly what you described, but I have played with the ODBC stuff including the #XL source included in the documentation to read from an .xls file and update my files. You may want to check this out. The documentation is at: http://www.signature.net/download/Documentation/odbc%20overview.doc.
Look in the documentation under SAMPLE PROGRAMS and see if any of these will help you out.
