It's only a question of having a true backup, if you have open files you don't know that you are in sync.
We have backup volume in the array and stop the service, do a "hot" backup to disk, start the services again and then do the "cold" backup of the copy to tape. This reduces down time and insures a good backup. We should not be working around a bug like this.
