The way to diagnose what is:
1. Download the latest sendmail.zip from http://signature.net/download/Demos/.
2. Unzip this into a comet directory on the client's system.
3. Edit sample1.txt.
4. Run sendmail. It should display that it is version 2.1 and ask you for a file. Specify sample1.txt as the file.
5. Tell it to display the log. You should see the problem there. If not, send the log to us and we can help.
I think it is a good idea about some diagnostic program for the winsock gateway. I will work on that.
