I used Disk-to-disk-to-tape with my Win2000 customers with BackupExec creating a compressed file on another physical disk (spindle) followed with the BackupExec disk-to-tape. The disk-to-disk runs in about 1/4 the time of the disk-to-tape.

My customers with Win2003 are using NTBackup which is VSS aware. Since they're all, small (1 - 50 GB) and don't use XAP, I'm not sure if this helps.

I do remember that "transactional logging" was an important topic at last years meeting. I'm sure it's on the list for this year too.
