Making progress on my own.
Decided that setting the focus or default to the Close button wasn't getting me where I needed to be. Clue for the clueless: the highlighted item in ListView was gray'd out even after the above attempts.
So I did a SetDlgFocus to IDC.LIST. The list remembers the last item and focus returns to the dialog and the item that was highlighted before the display button was click is rehighlighted.
I dropped the BS.DefPushButton attempt. I ended up with both the Display and Close buttons showing "default".
Right now the dialog looks good and is right where I want it to be.
