Though I wouldn’t recommend this setup for an end user production environment as a test bed I find it more than acceptable. So here is my under $600 AMD 64 x2

All prices from newegg.com links provided.

AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+ $159.00

PQI 1GB memory $99

WD Caviar 250GB disk $77

Biostar GeForce 6200 PCI Express Video card $32

Shuttle XPC Socket AM2 AMD Barebone $189

Liteon DVD Burner $30.99

Shuttle makes nice small footprint machines that work reliably. Very popular with the gaming crowd and LAN parties. No floppy drive.

Though the memory is rated for DDR2 667 and so is the motherboard, I found I had to change the speed to 400 to get Windows 2003 R2 x64 to install. We also added another GB of memory to break the $600 budget. The MB will only accept 2 Memory Modules.
