could you possibly use dns names instead? there are plenty of dynamic ip/dns naming tools floating around, alot of which are free. point the client to "somehost.somewhere.com", install some software on the server to update the dns name when the ip changes.. (try dyndns.com for example, or google 'dynamic dns')
just a thought. beats doing network scans.
