I'm all for using the registry, especially if it's HKCU. While you're at it, why not dump COSW.INI completely and move everything to the registry ..? The INI has been nothing but a headache, and despite the various changes that have happened with the location of the file, we're still unable to run Comet (2006 b373) under user privileges with XP -- I can only imagine Vista's UAC is going to make this even more annoying.

Maybe there's a win-win: search for the INI first in the usual places, but if it doesn't exist, read/write all values to HKCU. This keeps old installs running with the INI, allows 'special cases' to use an INI, but migrates all new installs to the registry.
