this is a long shot, but i'm curious if there's any entries in the eventlog (on either the server or the clients) when this happens.
specifically, i'm wondering if you're getting an entry for event 4226 - concurrent tcp connection limit exceeded. it's built in to the tcpip stack in winxp, and may explain why comet fails, but everything else continues to work.
(can't find a concrete answer about it being in win2003, but it's a possibility.)
