I think you hit on it. Seems to be related to the direct method. I tried to do it in Ctl5 and it didn't work, but I did get it to work in Dlg5, which is the same program written using a resource editor.
Brian's on vacation until Monday. I'm afraid you'll have to take it up with him then.
