USB blows ports??

I have a USB key on a Windows server. Just recently (over a 2 day period) the ports that the USB key has been installed into have gone bad. This is a total of three ports on the server. I have moved security to another PC that has working USB ports. The hardware person believes the USB key is shorting out and blowing the ports. Is this possible? If the USB key shorted out would it still be able to function for security? It has only been one day now that the security has been obtained from another PC and so far that USB port is OK.
